Should I be concerned about dark gums?

Is this a sign of something harmful or bad?

In most cases it is not harmful to have dark gums. It is more than likely a pigmentation issue. A dentist can treat it, if it bothers you.

If your skin tone is dark, this is no problem. However, there are incidences of melanoma on the gums. A dark color next to a silver filling can just be the silver leaching out, which is called an "amalgam tatoo. " This can be seen on a dental x-ray. Your dentist will be able to tell the difference.

If you are not experiencing any kind of pain or bleeding, you should check with your dentist. Some people just have different pigmentation in their gums, there are procedures that can actually lighten your gums to a healthy pink color.
