Should a heat pump be set on auto?

If you like heat, yes. If you don't, then cycle the thermostat between heat pump and auxilary heat at your own accord. If the outdoor temperature drops below 35 degrees F, and you are not in auto, then the backup heat will not come on.

Yes, if the heat pump is set on auto then it should be able to control itself so it wont over heat.
