Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) is extremely common cause of jaw pain and could be caused by simply chewing on something that was too hard or sleeping the wrong way causing your jaw to fall out of it's socket. A dentist or dental surgeon should be consulted if pain persists.

If you sleep with someone you should ask if you're grinding your teeth in your sleep. Grinding your teeth, clenching your jaw, or thrusting your tongue in your sleep can cause pain in your jaw the next day when you wake up. You can ask your dentist if they have any thoughts for treatment.

You could have some problem with your teeth in that area of your mouth or you could have TMJ. Try swishing cold water in your mouth to see if your teeth are sensitive to the cold.
