It could be several things. You may have a busted timing belt, is the mileage over 80,000?? You may also have a fault in the fuel or air system which will cause it to turn over, backfifre, but never start. Something like this would be hard to diagnose without hearing the motor turn over.

This means your either have a problem with your fuel system or the ignition system. If you have made and modification on the engine double check your work. Then start to go over your fuel system making sure you have fuel pressure. Then check your timing, spark plugs, electrical connections, and any other components of the ignition system.

Engine is not receiving fuel and/or spark. Work backwards to rule out components one at a time. Fuel = fuel injectors < fuel rail < fuel filter < fuel pump. Spark = spark plugs < wires < distributor < ecu and/or sensors. Bench test individual components to rule out.

The simplest answer: you are out of fuel, either the tank is empty or the filter is totally clogged. Barring that, the solutions get more complex, but likely reside somewhere in the ignition system. On the off chance you have a theft-deterring relay to the fuel pump, check that too.

This is most likely a symptom of the car not getting the fuel that it needs to start the engine. When it turns over the starter and battery are fine. You should check the spark plugs, fuel filter and ensure that the car is getting fuel in order for it to start.
