My bike is losing oil, what is the problem?

No leaks anywhere. But I can smell it. I add half a quart few hundred miles. My friend told me the bottom end needs rebuilding and that oil is getting past the rings

It could be the rings if you have a lot of miles on the engine. Disassemble it and check the seals and rings. You may need to rebuild it.

This is a common problem on older bike or bike with a lot of mileage. Your engine will eventually start to leak oil past it's rings as the bike gets up into the miles. This can also lead to blow by where oil gets into the cylinders past the valves. A rebuild should seal the cylinder again.
