The AST liver test detects the presence of liver enzymes. Elevated levels may indicate hepatitis, cirrhosis, enlarged liver or excessive alcohol intake. Certain medications may also elevate AST readings.

Aspartate aminotransferase is an enzyme that helps process proteins and may be raised if your liver is inflamed or injured- you have to find out why it is, whether excessive consumption of alcohol, hepatitis, or a simple infection, injury or treatable condition. Your doctor needs to sit down an explain.
