Msconfig causes my system to reboot, what should I do?

If msconfig is forcing a reboot, you may have malware on your computer. Several variants of viruses and trojans cause the computer to shutdown, or restart, to avoid being deleted in the registry or start up. You will need to run Malwarebytes, then a registry cleaner in safe mode (f8).

Go back to msconfig by going to Start - All Programs - Accessories - Run. Type msconfig and go to the startup tab. Select Normal startup or Safe Mode depending on what mode your stuck in.

When you change a setting in msconfig it must reboot in order to take effect, meaning that there is absolutely nothing wrong and you should continue using the computer like normal, however, if your messing with msconfig, and you don't know that it requires a reboot to take effect, you shouldn't be messing with msconfig.

Well if a prompt is coming up when you close it that is normal. Otherwise its probably a virus or something during start up. Try booting from the Windows Disk.

Have you run recently updated virus and malware scans? Have you installed any new hardware? Have you tried running msconfig in safemode?

msconfig is supposed to cause your system to reboot when you change something. I mainly use it to stop needless programs from turning on when the computer is booted up.

Msconfig is nothing a configuration wizard which is provided default by Microsoft. This help you to make some changes in start up or make a system to boot in Safe mode like that whenver you make change in that it asks you to restart the system. Then only the change will occur, if you no need disable the restart option.
