Exfoliation is the best way to prevent ingrowns. Try an exfoliating face wash or a gentle loofah a couple times per week. Anything with salicylic acid will help too. This will prevent buildup of dead skin cells over the hair. Also, try shaving with the grain of your hair instead of against it.

If you give the shaving cream or soap a few minutes to soften your beard, it should help reduce ingrown hairs. Of course you should also shave the beard in the direction in which it grows and not "against the grain." Sometimes a very warm compress to the beard before shaving will help matters.

Get a facial cleanser with exfoliating beads in it and use it daily. The beads will help to work the hairs out of the follicle and prevent ingrowns. Also just using a moisturizer and massaging it into the face will help.

In between shaves, try and exfoliate your skin with an exfoliating pad to get rid of surface dead skin cells that may be preventing the new hair from growing in.
