i dont know a test at home but you can take the ring to a pawn shop ask how much you would get for it say i dont know if it is real they will test it for you free by dunking it in something that will turn it green.

I thought if it turns green that just means that there is an element of copper in the gold (ie. 14k, 18k) as many times another metal is added to strengthen the gold.  add a comment

Place women's foundation on the top of your hand.Let it dry. Rub the ring on the foundation. The foundation will turn black if it is real.

Put a smear of Mac lipstick on the back of your hand. Rub the ring on it. Real gold should turn the lipstick blue-black.

Put it into salt water for at least 24 to 48 hours. Gold will not corrode in salt water. That will tell you it is gold but not wether it is pure gold or just gold plated.. The only other option is to take it to a professional jeweler.

One thing you can do is to soak your jewelry in acid. If it is not real gold, the plating will react with the acid and your jewelry will discolor. You don't have to exert great effort to do this test. Get some vinegar and soak the ring in it for a few minutes.

it may not be the best way but if you bite it and dent it or leave a mark then it is real.

Yeas you can buy an acid test kit. This will tell you if your ring is teal gold. These kits typically cost about 20 dollars. However you can get a kit much cheaper on ebay if you look around a bit.

From what I know or have heard from my grandmother, you may get a cup and fill it with lime juice then put the gold ring in it. If the gold ring is fake then it should tarnish if it comes out cleaner and shinier then it's genuine.
