Over the last few decades, the Sahara has been growing to include portions of the Sahel -- the semi-arid belt south of the Sahara. As formerly productive lands have turned to desert, its inhabitants have suffered periodic famines. The cause of this desertification is complex; overgrazing other destructive land-use is part of the problem; climate change is also a cause.

Research has shown the Sahara desert is expanding southward into populated areas, a process known as "desertification. " The reason for this growth is subject to debate. Some believe it is the result of human activities that cause loss of vegetation (for example, over-grazing cattle or cutting trees for fuel). Others believe the desert is expanding because of world climate change.

Yes, the Sahara desert grows a little bit every year. The grasslands and jungle at the edges of the Sahara recede a little bit every year. This is not caused by global warming, but has been a long lasting pattern for centuries and it is not sure when it will stop.

Scientists worry about the effect of growing deserts around the world, including the Sahara. Global warming, over-farming, and over-grazing contribute to the problem. Because the cause is difficult to pinpoint, local communities will need to explore alternatives to farming to sustain the population in the area around the Sahara.

Yes, unfortunately. It is spreading south into what is called the Sahel. This desertification is one reason experts believe the U.S. hurricane season is getting worse.

The Sahara is still growing at the southern end. However, this is mostly due to over-grazing on the bordering thin grasslands by herders, not due to global warming or other environmental reasons.

Recent evidence has shown that the Sahara desert is in fact growing. However, it is at such a slow rate that there is not much reason for concern. Certain developments are in order to prevent its advance.
