No. It's a remake of a 1979 film of the same name. Both films are based on an urban legend known as "The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs" that dates back to at least the 1960s and exists in many, many versions. There are no documented instances of the events, or any like them, actually occuring.

I love this movie! It scared me to death. However, this movie has never actually occured in real life. The plot in today's world is seemingly possible but an actual instance of this scenario has never been recorded. I always thought it was based on a true story too because this COULD happen.
