Question by  James20 (91)

Is the letter K used as the strike out symbol?

I need to know how to indicate a strike out in shorthand.

Answer by  GrahamM (47)

The letter K is used to indicate the strikeouts recorded by a pitcher. The letter K is used instead of SO because SO is already in use for when a pitcher throws a shutout.

Yes, the letter K is traditionally used, though K-S is also used, unofficially. Major League Baseball officially uses SO to designate pitcher strike outs. The backwards K is seen occasionally for "struck out looking".
