I have a Lincoln penny marked 197_ (The four digit in the year is missing.)

Yes it is significant to have a any coin with a missing digit. The mints have from time to time released coins with digits or double die cuts on them.

It is quite possible that an error like this could be worth a lot of money. You should take it to a coin shop so they can tell you for sure.
