In many states it's illegal to keep any turtles as a pet. Turtles often will carry salmonila disease, which is bad for humans and other pets. It's also not right for the turtle. Most also will be unhappy in captivity and will loose weight.

It depends on the species. If it's not a protected species (and few terrestrial turtles are), it's perfectly legal for you to keep it as a pet.

The legality of keeping a wild turtle as a pet is actually dependent upon where you live and the type of turtle. The size and breed of turtle can make a difference too. You should contact your local animal control for information regarding the laws in your area. You will also want to check for parasites or disease.

The legality of keeping the pet is going to depend on the type of turtle it is, the state you are living in, and whether you are actually prepared to care for a wild turtle.

It really depends on where you live. In most places keeping wild animals is illegal, but it's usually a safety question and the police may never bug you about it. Best to call your animal control office to be sure though.

If it is common in the area, it is likely legal but if it's rare or protected, no. More importantly, it's probably not good for the turtle.
