The original expression was "buck naked," referring to the wearing of a buckskin. "Butt naked" is the mispronunciation of the expression, which has grown more popular as more and more people have made the error, thus bringing it into popular usage. People think that "butt naked" makes more sense, but it simply a matter of having misheard it.

Both butt naked and buck naked are used and references to each can be found in publications and both appear to have stemmed from the phrase bare nacked.
