Is it appropriate for a wedding invitation to request gifts of cash?

I've never seen such a request until I received this invitation today.

It's becoming more common, but the appropriateness definitely depends on how the request is presented. If the couple is saving for something such as a new home, it would be appropriate to include a card with the invitation stating that if you would like to give a gift, the couple would prefer cash in lieu of other items.

... I'd like to add a stress to including the 'If you would like to....'. That's extreemly important. The request for cash on it's own is just rude.  add a comment

It is not appropriate to solicit a gift of any kind on any kind of invitation. It is common for couples who have lived together for a time to need very little in the way of goods for the house. But their desire for gifts of cash (or anything else) does not belong on the invitation. It's tacky.
