An element is a pure chemical substance containing only one type of atom. A compound is a chemical substance containing two or more types of atoms. Gold is an element; however, much of the gold we see today (like jewelry) is actually a mixture of the element with other metals.

Gold is an element-- it's a transition metal. Gold has symbol "Au" on the periodic table. Remember it with: "A! (hey) U! (you) Come back with my GOLD watch!"

Gold is a pure element. Gold is composed of only one type of atom and thus by definition of the makeup of an element it is one. A compound is composed of at least two or more types of elements. This is not the case with gold and thus is is a pure element.
