Flatbush was originally a separate town in the Dutch New Netherlands. However, as the population in the area grew, the towns grew together, and Flatbush was annexed to Brooklyn in 1894. Four years later, Brooklyn and four neighboring cities (Manhattan, Richmond, Queens, and the Bronx) joined to become the modern City of New York.

Brooklyn itself is not a separate city -- it is part of the City of New York. Flatbush was a separate town (originally "Midwout") from 1651 to 1894, when it was annexed by the City of Brooklyn. In 1898, Brookly, and four other boroughs, were consolidated into Greater New York.
