The active ingredient in Delsym Cough Suppressant is dextromethorphan, which enters the central nervous system and raises the threshold for coughing. It is found in many over the counter cough suppressants. At very high doses it can be used recreationally as a dissociative hallucinogenic. It has been reported to rarely lead to psychological dependence but is not physically addictive.

Dextromethorphan hydrochloride is the active ingredient and it does have opiate type properties including sedation, but is not generally thought to be strongly addictive or habit forming. It is contained in a lot of over the counter medications and is not compatible with a fairly long list of other medications so take expert medical advice to avoid inappropriate use.
