Is a Detroit 12.7 liter motor any good?

Are you kidding? Anything made in Detroit that even has the word Detroit in it's name has got to be good. On top of that it's a 12.7 liter engine. I don't see any rice-burner engines that are 12.7 liters anywhere, if there were they would be piece of junk throw away engines like the rest of them are.

Well if you want a good strong diesel engine for hauling stuff that sounds like a sturdy engine. It will probably put out around 450hp depending on the condition.

Depending on what your putting it in and who you ask, its a large motor for sure and burns all kinds of fuel. So if you could put it in something light you might be able to take advantage of the power.

Since it was first manufactured in the 1980's it would really depend on how it was maintained and what you planned on using it for. it was primarily designed for road coaches but was one of the first engines that used the Detroit Diesel Electronic Control (DDEC) system.

yes It's good highway engine with electonic control by DDEC system. Functions provided by DDEC are engine diagnostic functions,shutdown timers,fault history record keeping, speed limiting,cruise control and downloading periodical engine-management reports
