Yeah an interference engine is when your engine has the cam shaft of shafts over the valve head, a 2.0L SOHC stands foe 2 Litter Single Over Head Cam meaning that it has a single camshaft over the valves.

It is not an interference engine because it is only a single over head cam. The interference engines are mostly dual over head cams and that engine has more power than the single over head cam. The litres is also to low to be considered an interference engine also and should be higher.

Interference has nothing to do with SOHC or DOHC. Interference means the piston can hit the valves if the motor is out of timing. There are conflicting answers as to whether or not the Escort SOHC is interference or not... so i'm not sure.  add a comment

Just replaced timing belt on my 98 ford escort. This engine is NOT an interference. Plain and simple. If it were my motor would be F***ed. was doing 75 when my belt broke. replaced it and it runs prime!
