In the US, why are there different stamp sizes?

Seems like something that is so regulated should have more uniform appearance...

Most of the stamps are a certain size in the US. However, there are different sized stamps, mostly because of aesthetics. The USPS likes to create different size stamps with different designs so people will collect them and buy them.

The different sizes for postage stamps date back to the days when everything was done by hand, and there was no real problem with looking at each stamp individually. Then, stamps served an artistic purpose, and still do, since stamp collectors represent pure profit for the post office, people who buy stamps but never use them.

Stamps are issued as a symbol of pride, or to honour somebody/some place. Hence it is not neccessary to have stamps of the same size.
