The state of New York have any laws creating common law marriage laws. You do not acquire any of the marital rights and responsibilities by living together for a certain period of time. It does however recognize common law marriages that were created in other states as valid and legal.

While the State of New York will recognize common law marriages accepted in law by other states, New York does not legally accept or recognize common law marriage. If you wish to make provisions for property, children, medical rights etc, you need to consult a lawyer- no matter how long you have cohabited, you are not legally married in NY.
