If the check enigne light comes on in my Toyota could it be a belt problem?

Probably not. The ECM doesn't have any way of sensing a belt problem. Take your car to a shop and have it scanned. And if you're worried, replace the belt.

Maybe. A check engine light is usually emission related. I would have the vehicle scanned by an automotive technician. A faulty belt would most likely affect charging circuits.

It is probably not a belt problem with the engine light. It sounds like you could have a misfire or gas cap or something in those lines. Take it to Auto Zone and they will hook it up to the computer for free to find out what is wrong with it.

There is no way of knowing exactly why a "check engine" light comes on without having it diagnosed. Most autoparts store will check for free if it's 1994 or newer.

Typically a check engine light refers to something in the engine or transmission. However the only way to be sure what it is for is to have the computer scanned for codes. Either by doing it yourself with a code reader or by taking it to a mechanic. This should indicate where the problem is.
