Question by  spiritualawakening (1)

I have to color my hair nearly every three weeks? Is that too often?

I am coloring gray. I try to just touch up the roots each time.

If you have a beauty school nearby, go there for coloring. It's inexpensive, excellent quality and it will last longer. You won't have the distinct line of demarcation in the new growth, either. In the long run, you'll save money and your hair will be so much better for it.

Colouring hair too often isn't an issue. The problem is when a previous coloured area is recoloured. Only the grown in roots should be treated. In the last 5 minutes, colour diluted with water can be combed through to brighten existing coloured hair. If it's difficult to only touch up roots with an applicator, a 'Q-Tip' can be used.

Gray stands out more than any other hair color. People who cover their gray hair tend to need to do touch ups more often than someone who doesn't have to battle the gray.

It isn't a good idea to color your hair that often. You should try to find a dye that will last longer.

I do not color my entire head, as that color stays nice, but I do color the roots that have grown in, and this seems to need colored approximately every 3 weeks. Is this ok?

It is advisable to wait at least a month before re-coloring hair, so I think you are ok. Using color-treatment shampoo is a good idea though.
