These trees require lots of water and moisture. So it is best to keep the trees inside with a humidifier and in a warm spot. This is the reason these trees are hard to raise.

Wind and sun can cause drought in these trees with brown leaves and leaf "tieback" the symptoms. These trees are also susceptible to leaf-spot diseases. Aphids, scales, and Japanese beetles will attack them. Insecticides can be used as can introducing ladybugs as a natural predator. Do not place black walnut trees near Japanese maples as they are toxic to them.

First thing is that you need to be very careful about trimming your tree. These trees are quite delicate and go into "shock" if too much of the tree is removed.
