How were ancient societies run?

I am interested in how ancient societies functioned and how they evolved. Today's life has made so many advances, but ancient people were very creative.

In ancient societies Kings ruled & regulated the countries. Later kingdoms were replaced by leaders of military (dictatorship) or elected parties (democracy). The tax system existed already in acient times.

Ancient societies were run through age. The older members of society would teach the younger members how to survive and take care of themselves. This is a society like the Ancient Africans, etc. Societies would have a leader and appoint people to an informal board. The leader would ultimately make the decisions.

Ancient classical societies, such as the Egyptions, were ruled by all powerful autocrats who had total power over everyone. In fact, most ancient high or low civizilations were like this. In ancient Greece, the concept of Democracy, much similar to our own, took hold. Life in most ancient societies was short, hard and cruel for the majority of people.

In many ways ancient societies were awe-inspiring. We can trace the origins of philosophy, democracy and mathematics to early civilizations. Beautiful examples of craftsmanship and artistry from these eras still endure to this day such as Egyptian artifacts. Despite the glories, there were aspects such as the use of slavery, caste systems and female subjugation that are unacceptable today.
