I heard that some ships have their cost estimated by the ton. Supposedly the class of ship is the first indicator. A first of class ship is going to cost several million more than a third class of ship. This is the type of subject that needs lots of research.

The Navy calculates their new ship cost estimates using labor, materials, equipment to be used, program overhead, class of ship being purchased or built, number of units built or being purchased, subcontracts (if any), leased labor (if any). Most feel that the Navy overestimates quite frequently so it is guesswork.

Are you asking how to calculate cost estimates for purchasing a ship or are you asking what the procedure is to estimate costs for leasing a ship to ship consumer goods or personal goods? Just like with many large dollar purchases more information is needed in order for good answer.

the question should be is if the cost estimation should be for a ship that is already built or for one that is being contracted to be built :-)  add a comment
