How to bring a dog into a house that already has a cat?

I will be moving in with my girlfriend soon, she has a cat and I have a dog, I am concerned that one of us will have to get rid of our pet.

You have to be careful at first depending on both animals personality. Make sure you keep an eye on both. Also, very safely, bring them around each other. Talk to both animals in front of each other to let them know the other one is "good" and accepted, part of the family.

Create a space for each animal where they can both have their own space. I reccomend keeping the cat in his own room. The two will learn each others scent under the door and may have some interactions from opposite sides. When you do introduce them face to face, make sure they each have a safe escape place.

The introduction will have to be gradual, with each of you giving reassurance to your respective pets. Begin by keeping your dog in a separate room with the door closed, but let both get used to the scent of the other by sharing a toy or blanket. Then begin supervised time together in small amounts, gradually lengthening the time together.

Just watch them at first. If they fight, keep them separated and then slowly introduce them to one another. They should be fine after they adjust to one another.
