When mixing wood shades consider the room size and shape. Try keeping the different shades to a minimum. MMake sure to spread out the shades evenly across the room otherwise the room will feel uneven and heavier from one side to the other.

It really is best to stick to one shade otherwise the room will have a more dated feel. Consider painting the wood surface, or staining the light to match the dark. If you must have both colors you should have the biggest pieces lighter, and the smaller pieces darker especially in a small room.

There is nothing wrong with mixing light and dark woods in a room so long as you follow this general rule of thumb: do not mix more then 3 woods in one room. Group lighter woods closer together and darker woods with each other. Size of woods also make a difference and should be considered.

Best is if you have a painting or artwork you can hang that includes either both of the colors you are going to use, or something kind of neutral and in-between. Otherwise, try to move across the spectrum by having woods of varying shades from light to dark.
