Seal the wood with a few coats of shellac and than apply gel stain. You can control by wiping excess stain. Fiddleback is a beautiful grain, stain brings out the lighter colour. Make Sure before staining that the wood is properly sanded and cleaned off, simply paint the stain it as if your painting a wooden toy

You can get the wood abrasive spray from Home Depot and then you can stain the wood according to your preferences. Please bear in mind that there are many choices.

You are going to want to get good sandpaper and sand down the wood until it is all bare wood. You can then start to stain it with a good water based stain and just paint it on like you are painting a bedroom. Let it dry and then put it back where you want it.
