How should I respond to a lawsuit for debt collection?

Should I respond differently if I feel that I don't owe the money?

Always remember that whatever you respond becomes admissible in court. It is always better to say less than more. Depending on how much money we are talking it might be in your best interest to hire an attorney.

Quickly determine if you do indeed owe said debt. Otherwise, this could be a very negative blemish on your credit reports. If you do owe, have some money, and wish to erase the debt, contact the collector and negotiate and payment amount.

Your response should be to contact a lawyer. A lawyer will best tell you how to get out of it if your can, how to reduce the judgment, or how to declare bankruptcy.

Write an answer with paragraphs corresponding to the complaint. For each paragraph in the complaint admit or deny the facts in the corresponding answer. Then explain the defenses separately.
