Parakeets can bleed to death if you clip a blood feather or clip too low. Parakeets wiggle and struggle, so they are not easy to hold still for a sure enough cut, even if you think you know what you are doing. Please have a vet or avain savvy vet tech do this for you.

Use a towel over the head of your parakeet. This will keep them from biting you and being scared. You only want to trim the first five to six primary flight feathers. Do not cut them up too high so that the small feathers cover them. Also, never cut the short feathers.

You want to cut just the tips of the pinions, the long feathers at the front of the wing. Don't cut into the blood-filled part of the feather.
