We should water basil on regular basis to keep the soil moist. Over watering will cause pest or bacteria. Avoid watering the stems and leaves to avoid spots. Put little amount of fertilizer every month to the basil. We can use mulch to preserve the soil moisture.

The biggest problem people have with basil is over-watering it. Basil does not need a lot of water, maybe once a week (could be less if growing indoors)

You must water basil regularly. In potted plants, make sure you have drainage. With garden plants, if you use mulch around plants, you will maintain moisture and eliminate most weeds.

Unless it is very hot out, I rarely water my basil in the outdoor garden at all. It gets watered when it rains. I do water it if there is a dry spell and the ground is showing cracks from drought.

The first thing to remember when growing basil is that it needs to be kept constantly moist. To cut back on the frequency of watering, you can plant it with high quality soil and use mulch. These will retain water much better and keep your basil good and healthy.
