It's important that a bird have fresh water all the time. A sizeable container should be changed once a day or whenever it's visibly dirty, a smaller water container, more frequently. Food should be available all the time, since most birds like to have small frequent feedings. Food should be freshened daily, and the bowl cleaned frequently.

The best thing for your bird is to change both food and water every day. However, you should check often and change it if it gets soiled through out the day.

Every 2 to 3 days is the standard recommendation that you'll find in most books on hummingbirds and in the instructions included with most of the mass-produced feeders. If you feed hummingbirds through the winter, you can go as long as 5 ot 6 days between changes as long as the temperatures are cool enough.
