You can do 3 sets of 8-12 reps. You can do it twice a day, but adding weights to your body is much better choice than working out twice.

First, stretch before attempting any exercise and stretch afterwards to reduce muscle soreness. Once you've warmed your muscles up, do overhand pull ups until you have muscle failure. You can do pull ups as often as you physically can, just don't over do it. There is no limit.

You can do overhand pull ups anytime your muscles aren't already fatigued. Switching from overhand, to underhand, and back will also help even out your workout.

Your body will tell you if you are doing too many overhand pullups. When you are no longer able to do them, you have done enough for that session.

You can do them as often as you want, but it depends on your goals. A good strategy is to limit all out efforts to once or twice a week, but to do smaller sets as often as you can - this is called "greasing the groove."

You can do overhand pullups three times a day, and try to do as many as you can. This will increase muscular stamina.
