The salary of a movie director largely depends on the film they are working on, the studio they are working with, and the recognition they have within the film industry. For example Steven Spielberg may make millions for each picture, but there are also independent directors that make much less.

Directors tend to make percentage of what the entire movie makes as a profit. So if you make a movie that was a box office flop you aren't going to make a whole lot. On the other hand if you deal your cards right and the movie is a hit you can make plenty of money.
