There are two independent Senate members: Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Both these Senators caucus, or conference, with the Democrats. Lieberman ran for vice-president with Al Gore and the Democratic Party in 2000.

There are two independents in the Senate. Bernie Sanders, from Vermont, has never been elected as a Democrat or Republican, and describes his political orientation as "socialist. " Joseph Lieberman, from Connecticut, was a Democratic Senator until 2006, when he lost the Democratic primary and won a three-way race in the general election. Both Senators caucus with the Democratic majority.
