To properly drill for oil, a drilling company needs somewhere between a minimum of forty to eighty acres of land. This land is usually leased from a private owner, and a royalty on the oil extracted from the earth is paid to the owner. This royalty rate is usually somewhere between twelve and twenty five percent.

Most of the time how many acres that you need depends on where you live and what state you are in. Different states have different laws that you have to follow.
