I have taken prednnisone in the past and can tell you that it will take a while for it to get out of your system. However, most doctors will tell you that it takes about 3-5 weeks for it to completely be out of your system. In addition, if you have a fast metabolism normaly the prednisone can leave faster.

The half life of prednisone is just a few hours and it will be inactive or excreted after that. the side effects may last longer. Gastritis can last a couple of days. Hypertension or hyperglycemia may take longer to settle. Cataracts etc will need more intensive therapy. So it depends on the what specific side-effect you have.

Prednisone has some serious side effects like weight gain, water retention, night sweats, eye sight decrease ect. After you stop taking prednisone it may take up to a week to completely get out of your system but will take longer for some of the side effects to disappear. The weight gain is something you have to work on.

The half life of prednisone is four hours. So, theoretically, it should be out of your system eight hours after the last dose.

Understand but that is not quite what a half-life means. Rather 40 mg dosage means 20mg left after 4 hours, 10 mg after 8 hours, 5 mg after 12, etc.  add a comment

Two weeks ago rheumatologist increased prednisone from 2.5 to 25 mg. I'm weak, nervous, shaky, personality changes, coughing, at times feel pressure on sides of head and unable to sleep or function for hrs. Is this reaction normal? Will start treatment for stage 4-lung cancer soon. What do you recommend?
