How long should a root canal after an abscess take to heal?

Answer by  Aubs (1089)

It should take about 2-3 weeks for it to completely heal. There will be initial pain, much of which will be in the first week, with healing in 2-3.

I have had an abscess and had to have the tooth removed. It did take a couple of days for the soreness to ease and the gum to heal it was quite painful and could not eat much for a couple of days. It is best to go to the dentist as soon as possible because of infection

The tooth is usually tender to the touch for up to a week. But by two to three weeks the abscess should be fully healed and pain free.

You should feel some relief right away. It could take up to two weeks for the tooth to feel "back to normal". Call your dentist if the pain worsens.

A root canal is normally done in two separate appointments, one week apart. During the first root canal appointment, the dentist will open the tooth and allow the abscess to drain. The patient will feel relief almost immediately after the initial procedure has been performed. Once the pus has drained from the abscess, the throbbing pain will cease.

Typically a root canal aftern an abscess will take six months to show tangible signs of healing. The abscess often causes bone loss in the jaw, but x-rays taken 6 months later should show new growth (i.e. healing). Immediately following the root canal, however, the patient will experience healing in the form of reduced pain.

The time required for the root canal to heal depends on the severity of the abscess but it usually varies between couple of weeks and couple of months.

I had an abscessed tooth and my dentist gave me 3 days worth of antibiotics before doing the root canal. I was totally healed and pain-free in 3 days.
