Banks will generally follow the Uniform Commercial Code when it comes to personal checks. That states that banks are not required to handle personal checks that are more than 6 months old. However, a bank can choose to do so if it wishes. You should check with your individual bank to verify their policy.

Personal checks is considered to be negotiable for six months. Some checks expire before then; this is generally noted on the check. After this time, a check is considered "stale. "
