If all you can afford is plastic furniture, it can last for years with proper, gentle care and a mind to where it is stored. If you want something to withstand abuse, you should go for solid wood or iron. These will stand up to the elements and years of use when properly protected and sealed.

Plastic furniture can last anywhere from a year to three or four years depending on your weather and how well you take care of it. You will need to bring the furniture in during bad weather and hose it down when it gets dirty. I would recommend finding some cheap furniture.

Plastic generally lasts a long time and is generally cheap. However, they can be less aesthetically pleasing than other types of outdoor furniture. I would like to say that it will last a lifetime if you take good care of it. Even if you don't, it'll probably last awhile.
