How is rain measured?

I am curious as to who is keeping track to say "two inches of rain fell today . . . "

Rain is measured in a number of ways. Meteorologists have tools to detect how much water fell out of the sky. They measure radar echos and cloud ceilings to get an idea. The more amateur method of rain measurement uses a small guage that is placed in a location. The guage collects rainfall and allows you to measure it.

The meteorologists keep records of rain using a rain gauge and look for the mean based on certain regional boundaries. They also study and predict the expected rainfall based on observation of the weather conditions at the moment.
