When there is a deep infection in the root of a tooth a dentist may treat it in two ways. First, they may prescribe an antibiotic and inflammation medications for three days before performing any surgery. Then either a root canal or permanent extraction will have to be preformed. Many dentist will skip the medications and go straight to surgery.

With antibiotics your Dentist may also open up your gum to get rid of any pus and clean it out. Taking anti inflammatory drugs will help with the pain and swelling.

With antibiotics. See your dentist. After the infection has healed you may also need a root canal, i. e. , removing the root and filling in root cavity for a permanent solution.

It is possible to treat this condition with a course of strong antibiotics, usually taken for 10 days time. When the infection is more severe or is not responding to antibiotics, generally you will find it necessary to undergo a root canal, which can be done with no pain.

Most of the time antibiotics are prescribed for at least seven days then the dentist will recommend that you get a root canal and a crown or an extraction.

Your dentist will give you an antibotic to try and see if that will clear it up. If antibotics don't help the infection you may have to have your tooth pulled or a root canal. Most of the times if it is just an infection that has not done much damage then the antibotic should clear it up.
