A balance can electronic or mechanical as in the old fashioned scales. Mass is measured in grams, kilograms, pounds, ounces etc so when the object is placed on the balance the display panel shows the mass of the object. People often confuse weight and mass, weight cannot be determined by a balance it is mass multiplied by gravity.

Well a balance is used to measure the amount something weighs. Therefore, you place the item on a measuring mass and then you watch the balance go up and down accordingly. You can move the insert piece until it settles into a certain area. Move up and down and it will settle on one piece.
