Mach speed depends on the medium. The equation to calculate mach speed is velocity of the object divided by the speed of sound in the given medium. At 15 degrees C, the speed of sound in air, and mach 1, is about 760 mph. Mach 2 is double, Mach 3 is three times that number and so on.

Mach 1 refers to a aircraft moving at the speed of sound. That means it is going 717 mph. So Mach 2 would be double the speed of sound.
