Allergies can cause your eyes to swell. Conjunctivitis is also a common cause of eye swelling and can be caused by bacteria or viruses.

There are a whole lot of reasons your actual eye might be swollen, and none of them needs treated by someone who cannot see what's going on. If you feel that your eye is swollen, contact your physician immediately. While waiting to be seen, you should protect the eye from injury by covering it or keeping it closed.

Several things may cause the eye to become swollen. It may be as simple as an allergic reaction or an insect bite. Bacterial conjunctivitis (which can cause inflammation), a corneal ulcer or abrasion, or an eyelash leading to stye may also be the cause. A sebaceous cyst may also cause swelling in the eye.

Environmental allergies can cause eye swelling, as can a sty on the eyelid. An injury to the eye might be suspected. The eyelid itself can become infected and cause swelling and some people even complain of swollen eyes after sleep. Pinkeye, if it is severe, can also cause swelling.
