How does increasing the fish tank temperature prevent Ich?

Answer by  Tank (539)

Ich is a parasite commonly found in the home aquarium. It is seen by white spots all over the fish. The reason people use higher temperatures to treat Ich is that the parasite stops reproducing at 86 degrees. As the temperatures increase and the parasite dies off it will eliminate any remaining parts of the disease.

A proper temperature setting on your aquarium heater reduces the chance of ich (Ichthyophthirius multifilis), but does not prevent it entirely.

Increasing tank temperature prevents Ich because Ich has a optimal temperature for its survival. Once you raise the temperature of the tank it is difficult for the Ich to live.

Increasing the fish tank temperature doesn't prevent ich. Instead, it speeds up the process of the larvae spawning so that the medication that you're (hopefully) using kills the ich faster.

The fish have gotten Ich from a dirty fish tank in the first place! Cleaning the water and raising the temperature will kill the bacterium that is causing the Ich. Also adding medication to the water will help.

Ich cannot survive in water that is 86 degrees or over. Keep fish in this temperature for two weeks. Adding a teaspoon of salt per gallon helps also.

Ich (or "ick") is a fungus that can tolerate only a certain range of temperatures. If the tank is hotter, it is harder for it to grow.

It doesn't. Ich is a parasite that bores into the skin of fish, but must leave the fish to reproduce. Raising the temperature of the water speeds up the ich lifecycle. Ich will leave the fish faster, but unless the parasites are killed or prevented from reaching a new host fish, the fish will become reinfected.

Because certain temperatures provide excellent breeding for it and if you raise or lower the temperature it makes reproduction much more difficult but be cautious when you raise the temperature to kill the Ich that you do not raise it too high and kill your fish as well. You can also do a net search for more info on this.
