The abacus (or ancient counting board) is used by moving the beads to one side or another, creating mathematical equations.

An abacus had columns of 5 beads in the bottom section with two beads in the same column in the top section. You'd raise a bead on the bottom for each 'one.' When you had five on the bottom, you'd lower them and move a top bead to show "5".
